An Adventurous Stay at Hotel Casa Samán in Útica

For a long weekend—just as many Colombians love to do—we escaped out of the city and this time headed to Útica, a small and beautiful town surrounded by green mountains and quiet rivers. Before we booked the trip, none of our friends or colleagues had even heard of it. Útica is still fairly unknown, but this is part of its charm. The town survives on adventure tourism. It has peaceful streets, friendly locals, and stunning natural scenery make it a great place for a short escape. There are also many street dogs but unlike in many small towns, these were generally healthy and well fed.

Hotel Casa Samán – Simple, Affordable & Friendly

We stayed at Hotel Casa Samán, a small and basic hotel with prices that reflect its simplicity. At the time of booking, we paid 300,000 COP total per room for two nights, which felt very fair.

The rooms are generally clean and fan-only, and while the heat can be intense, most of our group managed well—even if I personally struggled at times. There is a small pool area where we spent our afternoons. It could use a little more care, but it was refreshing and relaxing, especially between activities. Drinks are available all day and night, and we paid only 4,000 COP for a beer, which felt like a bargain.

Food is available at the hotel, but we chose to eat in town every day. The town centre has a good variety of simple but tasty options. We especially recommend trying the picada, which is perfect for sharing. There was also a small burger place that delivered late at night—ideal for post-adventure snacks.

In the evenings, we sat by the pool or at the tables playing card games with a drink in hand. The atmosphere was easy, friendly, and relaxed.

One of the owners, Felipe, was incredibly kind and organised everything we needed. Whether it was tour bookings or local advice, he made the stay smooth and enjoyable.

Adventure Activities in Útica

Útica offers plenty of outdoor activities. These were the options we were quoted during our stay although we are sure you can book directly:

1. Buggy Tour

A fast and exciting ride through countryside roads.

  • 4 km: 90,000 COP per couple
  • 10 km: 180,000 COP per couple

2. Rafting

A refreshing river adventure with trained local guides.

  • 120,000 COP per couple

3. Canopy (1,000 mts)

Enjoy high-speed views over the valley.

  • 130,000 COP per couple

4. Torrentismo

Descend waterfalls during a four-hour canyoning experience.

  • 150,000 COP per couple

5. Cabalgata (Horseback Riding)

A gentle one-hour ride through natural trails.

  • 135,000 COP per couple

6. Puentes & Circuito Aéreo

Includes Tibetan, Himalayan, and Indiana bridges, plus a canopy line and a final rappel.

  • 90,000 COP per couple

We chose the bridges and aerial circuit, and it was an incredible adrenaline rush—challenging, fun, and very rewarding.

Final Tips for Visiting Útica

  • The town is in the middle of nowhere, and the last 20 minutes of road are not well maintained. However, we managed perfectly fine in a normal car.
  • Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. The heat is real.
  • Book your activities early, especially on long weekends.
  • Enjoy the slow rhythm—Útica is small, friendly, and perfect for adventure and relaxation.

We fully intend to return to complete the rest of the activities. Útica may be small, but for adventure lovers, it has a big heart and plenty to offer.
